Now, this is never gonna happen again, but I woke up last Saturday Morning to the news that Mike Tyson got beat by Jake Paul. (I've never watched a fight in my life, but I remember growing up that Tyson was this mythologically unstoppable force, so there was a bit of me that was hoping the best fighter of my generation knocked this upstart social media influencer's lights out. Thing is? Tyson's age aside, I kinda feel like I knew where it was going. You know, my usual struggles with Entropic Disorder, the recent election, mortality issues...blah blah blah.)
So hearing the results of the fight, I wasn't surprised; but also, something clicked. The opening line came into my head. Some improv/free writing on the idea went into my Notes app on Saturday, I transferred it to a proper document on Sunday, reworked it on Monday, and submitted it on Tuesday. THEN I realized there was a major issue with it--I had structured the piece as a series of questions instead of statements--so I withdrew it, made the change to statements, resubmitted. And the fine folks at BULL accepted it on Wednesday with one of the nicest notes I've ever gotten about my writing. Fastest turnaround to publication ever. So again, I know this stroke of inspirato will never happen again, but I'm very proud that I was able to make something that I felt was juuust right, that was exactly what I wanted to say, before I overthought/overworked it to death.
Oh, and if the conspiracy theories are true? If this fight was rigged? Then that makes it even worse. Because that would mean Tyson wasn't beaten, but he gave up.
Anyhoo, here's Wonderwall: Jake Paul Beats Mike Tyson.
